Even though it seems as though hiring a maid service is the best option, it makes you cringe to think of allowing strangers into your home openly. If it makes you feel more comfortable, schedule the appointment at a time when you'll be home, so you can get to know your maid (or maids) on a personal basis. In general, a lot can be learned about a person just by meeting with him or her for a few minutes. If you find that there is no chemistry or respect, then you'll probably want to look somewhere else.

You can do this either with him/her or alone-whichever makes you feel the most comfortable. The important thing is that you ensure the maid did a thorough job and scrubbed all of the hard-to-reach places. If you're not completely satisfied, there are two ways you can attempt to fix the problem. You can either stop using their services, or you can complain and tell them how they can do better on their next visit.

Do you not only want your house cleaned, but meals cooked as well? One important thing is that you should discuss your needs and desires right away, before you even hire a maid service. When the lines of communication are open and you both have a mutual respect for one another, you'll look forward to a spotless home and a new found friend!

Great care should be taken when cleaning anything of value, whether it is a priceless heirloom from a relative or a recently purchased oil painting from a local artist. Use the tips below, or leave it to the pros.
Cleaning Original Oil Paintings
Oil paintings can be both tricky and delicate, and if there is the slightest concern about the finish, they should be handled only by those trained in art restoration. If you feel confident and your oil painting only needs a slight once-over, you can use a soft, fine bristled brush (a paintbrush is appropriate for several reasons) to dust over the grooves and canvas as needed. Follow with a soft bristled vacuum attachment, being careful not to move the fabric of the canvas as you sweep up loose debris. The same care can be taken with the frame, if applicable.

Nothing freshens up a room like a houseplant. They clean the air, give decor a soft visual interest, and provide a relaxing routine to homeownership. With so many varieties out there right now, the question isn’t where to put a plant, but how many to get.
Best houseplants for bright rooms
Anthurium is a fun and funky houseplant that comes in a variety of single-petal bloom colors, although red is most common. Its heart-shaped leaves are stunning on their own, especially as the plant reaches its full size of two to three feet high. Keep this one in bright, but indirect, sun and in evenly moist soil.
Other great favorites: Aloe vera, asparagus fern, snake plant
Best houseplants for bathrooms
Aglaonema, also known as the Chinese evergreen, is a red-tipped houseplant that thrives in low-light environments. While it doesn’t bloom, its tinged leaves provide a burst of color, making it perfect for bathrooms that don’t get much sunlight. Another bonus: It tolerates a fair bit of neglect, so the moisture from your shower may be enough to keep it going if (when) you forget to water it.
Other great favorites: the prayer plant, English ivy, anthurium, and Hoya (wax plant)

There’s a big movement sweeping across the country and most of it fits in three parking spaces.
Where the typical American home is about 2,600 square feet, most tiny houses have an area between 100 and 400. Sound impossible? Maybe for some, but there is a growing number of people who are actively choosing to downsize their homes, lifestyles, stress, and expenses.
“The tiny house movement is a choice in intentional living,” said Will Johnston, Executive Director of Tiny House Atlanta. “It requires homeowners to align who they are and what they love with what they own and how they want to live.”
While the majority of Americans would have a hard time living their busy lives out of what is the size of the average garage, most people can benefit from the driving philosophy behind the cause. “Tiny houses do require a change in lifestyle,” stated Johnston. “And a lot of that comes with a change in perspective. You have to have less stuff to make it work, so we teach our homeowners to make the best use of the things they actually love and use.”
This often means identifying what gets eaten on a daily basis, what gets worn on a weekly basis, and what gets used on a monthly basis.
Breaking up is hard to do, especially with your cleaning service. While there are do’s and don’ts for ending a personal relationship, severing a business relationship with someone who cleans your home isn't so cut and dried. And if your maid is a sole proprietor (meaning she only works for herself), it’s even more complicated.
Before you start the process, come to grips with the fact that there really is no easy way to do it. Once you own that it won’t be fun for either of you, don’t waste any time and try these tips.
If the breakup is due to performance
If you are happy with some aspects of service, but unhappy with others, the ol’ cut-and-run may not be the best solution. Take a moment to communicate your expectations clearly and use that conversation as a way to set up an imminent break-up if things don’t improve. By laying the groundwork, you’ve paved the way for both of you to make it work, and you’ve also crafted an elegant exit strategy if you need one.

If you could bottle common sense and put elbow grease in a jar, you’d get a clean house just like Grandma used to do it. Here are five “home remedies” that will take your home back to a simpler, cleaner time.
Do it on the daily.
Grandma believed in leaving the house better than she found it, which is why she made her bed as soon as she woke up, finished the washing the dishes after every meal, and swept the floor at the end of the day. When things don’t have a chance to stack up, the process of cleaning isn’t so overwhelming.
She threw in the towel.
Flour-sack towels, the large lightweight white towels often sold in bundles of 12, were Grandma’s go-to cleaning tool. Naturally lint-free, absorbent, and thin, flour-sack towels dry, polish, scrub, and wipe better than most paper towels. Added bonus: they launder well and dry quickly.
Cleaning for a season.
Not to be confused with Cleaning for a Reason (which is another idea grandma would have loved), seasonal cleaning was the way Grandma made sure certain household tasks were done on a regular basis throughout the year. Windows were scrubbed, closets were purged, and carpets were steam-cleaned like clockwork, ensuring the house...
Where will you find your pop of gold? Allows us to offer some suggestions.
The Gold Standard for Living Rooms
Open-concept, free flowing and non-conformist, this living room abuts the kitchen in a way that somehow both entertains and relaxes. Brushed finishes pair happily with jewel tones. Dark wood floors give weight to the home’s bright personality. Neutral walls make sure everything gets along. These homeowners even have the audacity to pair a yellow chair with a gold end table—and totally get away with it. Why? Because gold doesn’t take itself too seriously. It's as if it knows its value while still remembering its humble origins. And this is exactly why gold rocks.

Gold has a way of luring you in (ask any leprechaun), and this bed makes quite the attraction. Our staff loved the feminine waves of the guided headboard against the masculine gray walls, until one of our interns piped up that the shapes they formed were more like bat symbols than water. We won’t disagree. There are worse arguments to make over bedroom style, and this one could make a hero out of anyone.
Claire Dunphy has a point in this episode of Modern Family: When a mom is traveling with her family, it’s not a vacation. It’s a business trip.
When I saw this episode, I found an instant kindred spirit in this feisty modern mom. She got it. She knew the drama of planning for every contingency, the last minute sweep of things to do before getting everyone to the airport on time, the nagging feeling that she was going to be welcomed back home from tropical paradise with bathrooms rattled by last-minute prep, dishes she forgot to clean, and beds she didn’t have time to make.
Or maybe I’m projecting.
Hear me out. Vacations are necessary. Breaking from routine is important. Spending quality time with family is never out of the question. But…wouldn’t it be nice if the all-inclusive vacation also included a clean house upon arrival? Is it wrong that my favorite part of vacations is the fact that I can leave the hotel room in disarray and come back to it cleaned and freshened by someone else? Am I weird to feel the same way about soothing, sandy beaches as I do about gleaming, clutter-free countertops?
Don’t answer that.
The truth is, vacations—especially family vacations—aren’t...
Just because a room has “formal” and “dining” in its title, doesn’t mean it has to be either, as these five rooms attest. If you can count on one hand the number of occasions you use your formal dining room as a place to serve a meal, it may be time to consider a more active use of the space. This doesn’t mean you have to let go of its purpose entirely; as you’ll see in the examples below, there are ways to incorporate your formal dining into your informal life room without losing its luster.
Give it a new title. Or 100.
Nothing warms up a heart or a room like a good book. This dining room enters a new chapter of comfort, design, and function by serving as a home office, a den, and, occasionally, a place to enjoy good food and good words with friends. To add character(s) to your room, start with a warm neutral and add bookshelves as you see fit.

As we said in our Lessons in Pink blog back in October, it isn’t just scientists or nurses or oncologists that make a difference to cancer patients; we all can. Sometimes, however, it’s hard to know what to do, how to help, and where to focus, especially when you also may be reeling from your loved one’s diagnosis.
How you help doesn’t have to be big or extravagant. “It’s quite the opposite, actually,” says Jenn McRobbie, breast cancer survivor and author of Why Is She Acting So Weird?: A Guide To Cultivating Closeness When A Friend Is In Crisis. “Sometimes the best things you can do for your loved ones—and yourself—is to keep it simple.”
Here are eight things to consider when helping those with cancer and other long-term illnesses.
1. Send her texts to let her know you are thinking of her.
“I never got tired of seeing texts that said, ‘I’m thinking about you. You don’t have to respond. I just wanted you to know you were on my mind,’” adds McRobbie. “It removed any requirement to return the favor or say thanks or engage if I wasn’t feeling up to it. I could just soak it up.” You can also add funny memes, a random word-of-the-day, or a quick emoji to this list.
It’s so easy to be lazy in living rooms. After all, everything about them—from their couches to their foot rests to their televisions—says, “Come. Sit down. Lounge.” Unfortunately, for many of us, these rooms also say, “Ack. Mess.”, which makes the sitting down and the lounging a little harder to do.
Not in 2017, my friend. This year, we’re going to tackle living room clutter and chaos once and for all.
We all know this saying “A place for everything and everything in its place,” but we don’t always use it properly. If you can’t find a place to put something, it probably a) doesn’t belong in your living room; b) doesn’t belong in your house or; c) doesn’t belong in your life. Remember, the less you have to clean around in your living room, the less you have to clean around.
No clothes in the living room.
No, this isn’t that kind of household. But shoes and socks and hats and coats have no business being in removed in a room that doesn’t typically have a closet or a bed. If you want to kick your shoes off when you get home, put them where they belong. One caveat to this rule: you can totally fold laundry here—just commit to putting it away.
I’ll open with the obvious: No one likes to clean bathrooms. (Well, no one except for these people, who make it their job). Aside from the kitchen, bathrooms are one of the most difficult rooms to keep clean, and also one of the most important. It’s not that the task itself is hard; it’s just that you have to keep doing it. And it’s not exactly fun.
So let’s find ways to make it less painful.
Clear the air.
Out of all the culprits that derail most bathroom cleaning efforts, moisture is the biggest one. It causes mildew, discolors grout, leaves water spots, and make towels smell. Tackle moisture, and you’ll tackle half your bathroom cleaning woes.
• Use a shower squeegee. A couple of extra minutes after a shower to pull excess moisture from the walls will go a long way in keeping your grout dry and mildew-free. And this is much better than cleaning each discolored grout line with an old toothbrush.
• Use a water repellent on your shower doors. That’s right, what works for your windshields can also work for your bath and shower (just make sure to read the instructions). Water repellents help water, soap, and minerals scoot down the drain before they have the chance to linger and...
It takes 1,000 people only one day to drag 24 pounds of grime into your building during the winter. When used in combination with other measures like hard floor cleaning and carpet care, mats can help minimize the amount of dirt that gets in and prevent visitors from tracking it farther as they move around […]
Last year Southern Ontario enjoyed a relatively mild winter, but Mother Nature isn’t promising to be so kind this year – bringing back the snow, sleet, and ice we’re all accustomed to. Do you have the right floor care system in place to keep hard floors and carpets looking their best all season long? Check […]
This is the year you are going to do it. You are going to use these tricks to get tidy and stay that way.
(Repeating the above is helpful).
(So is reading what we have below).
Straight to the source.
If you want your house to stay cleaner, longer, you have to tackle the problem at the source.
Some of this may involve training family members to put things back where they found them.
Some of this may involve making that feat easier to do.
Some of this may involve fewer things.
In this five-blog series, we’re going to tackle five problem areas in your home and give you some simple, actionable ways to curb clutter, keep items organized, and help each space contribute to your calm instead of taking away from it.
The problem areas these organizing hacks will address in each post are:
Your living room
Your home office
Before we get started in the individual areas, there are so some overarching tips and tricks that can get you started, particularly if you have some downtime between the holidays.
Let’s talk trash.
Think about what you do in each room of your home, specifically regarding trash. Trashcans in living rooms may seem weird or...
When we remodeled this kitchen five years ago, I seem to remember ordering a huge slab of beautiful granite to go right on to of our center island. It had lovely golden flecks. There was a gorgeous vein of white that accented one side. It really tied the whole kitchen together.
And now I’ve lost it.
Okay, not really. But it does disappear on occasion, and it’s starting to frustrate me. I would venture to guess that, out of all the time I spend in my kitchen, I spend about 80% of it trying to find counter space. I haven’t calculated this officially, of course (who has the time for that?), but it feels like I’m in a perpetual state of shoving to one side, stacking, and wiping down, just so I can make room for something else.
No matter what is going on in your home, clean, uncluttered countertops give you a huge step in the right direction. So let’s take huge steps this week. Let’s talk about how to keep your kitchen clean, whether it’s after a weekly cleaning service from the Maids or a during your everyday life.
We’ve written extensively on kitchen organization and kitchen cleaning tips. Below are our favorite blogs and our favorite tips from each.
Every holiday season my plan starts out with the same vision. Smiling, happy holiday card printed the week after Thanksgiving. Freshly baked goodies for all of my lovely friends and neighbors. Gorgeous meals. Perfectly shaped tree with all of my favorite ornaments, glowing with lights.
And every year I end up being so stressed out by the holidays I end up wishing they were over. And that’s not what I want at all.
So this year, I’m throwing it all out the window. I’m setting the bar low so that I can’t help but be impressed with myself. Here are some handy tips.
The Holiday Card
Again, lower your expectations. Most of those card printing sites are designed specifically for you to feel like you are failing as either a human, a parent, or a photographer. Just kidding. But not really.
Best: Everyone wearing coordinating outfits, smiling like they mean it, with a backdrop that matches the card design.
Good: Everyone is mostly smiling and looking at the camera.
Good Enough: No one blinked.
Plan for the best, prepare for the worst in this scenario. By all means, go for the bacon-wrapped-bourbon-soaked-turkey manifesto. But if that should go horribly wrong, find some big...
A memorable, if oddly appropriate, quote from The House Bunny is one of my favorite do-good sentences of all time: “Kindness is just love with its work boots on.” There’s never been a better time to teach, learn, and explore exactly what those words mean, and, if you are raising a family, you can never start too early. That's why we put together these simple kind ways for kids to give.
Luckily, teaching kindness shouldn’t be too far out of your way. After all, if you’re reading this, you’re interested in learning and doing more for others, and that’s kindness in its own right, because teaching compassion, generosity, empathy, and the courage to engage in positive change is one of the greatest gifts you can give your children.
The best thing about the suggestions we’ve provided below is that they are great activities you can do together and as a family, neighborhood, and community. All of which teaches another important lesson of its own: that we’re all in this together. You’ll also stay on top of toys, books, and games you no longer use in your house, which can benefit everyone.
